Marketing 101 or ABC2’s of Marketing

All of you have heard of the old business cliché: Always Be Closing. It’s always given as a little piece of free advice. Well, here’s another: Nothing in life is free. And you get what you pay for. Obviously, the point of marketing is to sell something “better” than something else. It may not even truly be a better product or service, but that’s why you must “market” it to your first. Closing a deal is only one part of the cycle. Another very important part is getting your business to your target demographic, or audience first.

This may not be the first time you are trying to take charge of your business’ marketing “budget” and some of you even may already know some of these concepts, but it’s always good to get a refresher. Even if you do not know a single thing about social media, you can learn these fundamental (yes, it’s simplistic, KISS*) words and apply them to your marketing social media strategy.

Audience. Do a little research. Google is still free. Know your Audience. Do they visit Twitter or Facebook more? Do they even have an account with LinkedIn? And how do you make a YouTube video again? Here’s another cliché that holds truth: Time is money.  This means that time spent promoting your business or service on the internet needs to be focused, or you’re just wasting time playing candy crush. Just know that your target demographic is your Audience. This is important because you need to know where your product or service is being sold before spending a single dollar on fancy leads.

Bargain or value while branding. This is a no-brainer. You need to sell your product or service in a very competitive market. You always need to watch your bottom line, so you need to make sure you get your return on investment (ROI). Metrics may seem like a daunting task, but you need to gather data to make informed investments. Remember when I said you get what you pay for? Well, make sure you don’t have to pay for it first before anything else. I also said Google is free. So is Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, and they all offer business pages that come with interesting insights with upgrades. Look for a marketing genius that will help you navigate these various platforms.

C2ontent, content, content (calendaring). Everyone has an opinion these days. It’s all posted on the Internet. And anyone knows that if it’s on the internet then it must be fact. Nope. #FakeNews. Content is saturating the media and it’s not all sourced reliably. This means that you should really think about what your audience wants to know how their purchase will change their lives for the better. What does content have to do with that? Well, why does someone want to visit your website vs. YouTube or Facebook or any other media content provider? Yours needs authenticity. This means your voice should come through and it should be clean and consistent. Consistency means you should also “Always Be Calendaring”. Smartphones make that easy today with built-in calendars. Take advantage of the free stuff. Oh, and just because I said it doesn’t have to be perfect, you also don’t want to Trump Twitter at 3 am on the toilet. #IJS**.
